Baalkaryakram Nebraska is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching the Nepali language, culture, and heritage – bhasa, bhes ra sanskriti – to children growing up in the United States and Canada.
Our journey began over 20 years ago in Omaha, Nebraska, when a group of Nepali friends came together with a shared concern: their children were slowly losing touch with the Nepali language. They felt a deep responsibility – not only to preserve their culture but to ensure that bonds between generations, especially between grandparents and grandchildren, remained strong through shared language and traditions.
What began as a small Nepali class in the basement of a community member’s home has since blossomed into a well-structured, volunteer-led educational program. Today, Baalkaryakram Nebraska offers systematic instruction in Nepali language and culture – with active participation from both parents and community members.
With the launch of virtual classes, our reach has expanded far beyond Nebraska. We now proudly serve students from across the United States – including Texas, Georgia, Colorado and even from Toronto, Canada. This growing community reflects a shared commitment among Nepali families in North America to keep their language and cultural identity alive.
Our continued success is made possible by our selfless volunteer teachers, supportive families, and generous community partners. Parents play an active role by encouraging participation, volunteering time, and helping the program navigate financial and logistical challenges.
We are especially grateful to the Omaha community for its foundational support—libraries, parks, community centers, and the Hindu temple have all welcomed our programs over the years.
As Baalkaryakram Nebraska continues to grow, we remain committed to our core mission: nurturing a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among the next generation of Nepali Americans and Canadians, wherever they may be.
In addition to language education, we offer a variety of following cultural and community-building activities.
Yoga sessions that promote mindfulness and spiritual well-being through traditional practices.
Festival celebrations that bring Nepali holidays to life, connecting children with the rituals and values of their heritage.
Annual picnics and cultural gatherings that foster community and belonging.
Abhibhawak Diwas (Parents’ Day)—a special day to honor the role of parents and strengthen intergenerational ties.
